TRAINING AND INNOVATION CENTER TO SUPPORT THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN ITS DIGITAL SHIFT
Cégep Limoilou inaugurates its BIM Center of Expertise, a collaborative space equipped with tools at the cutting edge of technology. This Center now offers a full range of training, workspaces and collaboration as well as technical support to companies who want to innovate and enter the new digital era. It responds effectively to the needs expressed by the construction industry which is currently making a major technological shift with the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) or building data modeling. The Center was built with an investment of nearly $ 1 million.
BIM solutions
BIM is a new way of working that facilitates communication and information sharing between stakeholders. This innovative process connects all stakeholders involved in the realization and management of the same building and infrastructure project. By using shared databases, linked to digital models, the efficiency of construction is increased. The architect, the engineer and the contractor work on the same digital model, and this from the design of the structure to its construction, and possibly even in its maintenance. This makes it possible to identify and avoid possible errors upstream of the site. BIM therefore enables construction projects of superior quality and ultimately better costs.
Forerunner in Quebec
Since 2010, Cégep Limoilou has positioned itself as a leader in Quebec in BIM-related training by bringing together the best experts from the industry and organizations working in BIM. This network allows it to offer unique training tailored to the needs of the industry. According to Chantal Arbor, Executive Director of Cégep Limoilou: "With the BIM Center of Expertise, Cégep can better meet the needs of the construction industry and prepare the workers of tomorrow. The digital transformation is well underway in this industry and we intend to be a major player in supporting and achieving this important shift. "
In addition to offering training specifically designed for industry stakeholders, the Center, available for rent, can become the project office for companies wishing to experiment with BIM, its technological tools and practices. In addition, teachers and students from several Cégep Limoilou high-tech programs affected by BIM will also have access to it in order to prepare the next generation.
As both a benchmark and industry trend watch, the Center will also schedule conferences and networking events. It will be able to accommodate delegations, facilitate exchanges of teachers and researchers with other research institutes in BIM and allow Cégep Limoilou to export its know-how internationally. An advisory committee, made up of the major partners of the BIM Center of Expertise and industry players, will contribute to keeping abreast of industry trends and play an advisory role for the development of the Center.
Medium support
Major public contractors, both in Quebec and elsewhere in the world, already recognize the positive and transformative impact of BIM processes for the construction and management of public assets. BIM practices and associated IT solutions are redefining the construction industry by improving competitiveness and creating new opportunities for professionals, manufacturers, contractors and property managers.
Several major projects are now carried out in BIM in the region. Examples include the new hospital complex at the CHU de Québec and the new international terminal at the Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB).
"To complete the terminal expansion and redevelopment project, we have integrated the BIM approach into our project management mode as much as possible, from start to finish. When BIM was put in place five years ago, YQB was a pioneer with its project office bringing together all stakeholders - the engineering professionals, the construction manager and the YQB project team. "We are confident that the BIM Center of Expertise will meet a critical training need in the Quebec City region. Tomorrow's construction projects will all be in BIM and it is now time to train our workforce and our businesses so that everyone can follow the parade. Added Ms. Simard.
The BIM revolution is as important to the industry as when computer-assisted design software has replaced the drawing board. Now, the need to switch to BIM mode is also felt in smaller companies. The training and support needs are great. The BIM Center of Expertise is here to support businesses in this important transformation at the heart of the future of the construction sector in Quebec.
The construction of the BIM Center of Expertise was supported by the federal government's Strategic Investment Fund for Postsecondary Institutions (SIF). It is also receiving support from the Quebec Housing Industry Development Support Program (PADIQH) and the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ).

Le Cégep Limoilou dévoile son Centre d’expertise BIM
Pôle de formation et d’innovation pour accompagner l’industrie de la construction dans son virage numérique
Québec, le 15 octobre 2018 – Le Cégep Limoilou inaugure son Centre d’expertise BIM, un espace collaboratif doté d’outils à la fine pointe de la technologie. Ce Centre offre dès maintenant une gamme complète de formations, des espaces de travail et de collaboration ainsi que du soutien technique aux entreprises qui veulent innover et entrer dans la nouvelle ère numérique. Il répond efficacement aux besoins exprimés par l’industrie de la construction qui réalise présentement un important virage technologique avec l’implantation du Building Information Modeling (BIM) ou modélisation des données du bâtiment. Le Centre a été construit grâce à un investissement de près d’un million de dollars.
Les solutions BIM
Le BIM est une nouvelle façon de travailler qui facilite la communication et le partage d’informations entre les intervenants. Ce processus novateur met en lien tous les intervenants concernés dans la réalisation et la gestion d’un même projet de bâtiment et d’infrastructure. En utilisant des bases de données partagées, liées à des maquettes numériques, l’efficience de la construction est augmentée. L’architecte, l’ingénieur et l’entrepreneur travaillent sur une même maquette numérique, et cela de la conception de l’ouvrage jusqu’à sa construction, et même éventuellement dans sa maintenance. Ceci permet de repérer et d’éviter des erreurs possibles en amont du chantier. Le BIM permet donc de réaliser des projets de construction d’une qualité supérieure et ultimement à meilleurs coûts.
Précurseur au Québec
Depuis 2010, le Cégep Limoilou se positionne comme leader au Québec dans la formation liée au BIM en rassemblant les meilleurs experts de l’industrie et des organisations œuvrant en BIM. Ce réseau lui permet d’offrir des formations uniques et adaptées aux besoins de l’industrie. Selon Chantal Arbour, directrice générale du Cégep Limoilou : « Avec le Centre d’expertise BIM, le Cégep pourra encore mieux répondre aux besoins de l’industrie de la construction et préparer les travailleurs de demain. La transformation numérique est bien amorcée dans cette industrie et nous entendons être un acteur de premier plan pour soutenir et réussir cet important virage. »
En plus d’offrir des formations spécialement conçues pour les intervenants de l’industrie, le Centre, disponible en location, pourra devenir le bureau de projet pour des entreprises qui souhaitent expérimenter le BIM, ses outils technologiques et ses pratiques. Par ailleurs, les enseignants et les étudiants de plusieurs programmes d’études en haute technologie du Cégep Limoilou touchés par le BIM pourront également y avoir accès afin de bien préparer la relève.
À la fois pôle de référence et de veille des tendances de l’industrie, le Centre programmera aussi des conférences et des événements de réseautage. Il pourra accueillir des délégations, faciliter les échanges d’enseignants et de chercheurs avec d’autres instituts de recherche en BIM et permettre au Cégep Limoilou d’exporter son savoir-faire à l’international. Un comité aviseur, composé des partenaires majeurs du Centre d’expertise BIM et d’acteurs de l’industrie, contribuera à la veille des tendances de l’industrie et jouera un rôle-conseil pour le développement du Centre.
Un appui du milieu
Les grands donneurs d’ordres publics, tant au Québec qu’ailleurs dans le monde, reconnaissent déjà l’effet positif et transformateur des processus BIM pour la construction et la gestion des actifs publics. Les pratiques BIM et les solutions informatiques qui y sont associées redéfinissent l’industrie de la construction en améliorant la compétitivité et en créant de nouvelles opportunités pour les professionnels, les manufacturiers, les entrepreneurs et les gestionnaires immobiliers.
Plusieurs grands chantiers s’effectuent désormais en BIM dans la région. À titre d’exemples, citons le nouveau complexe hospitalier du CHU de Québec et la nouvelle aérogare internationale de l’Aéroport international Jean-Lesage de Québec (YQB).
« Pour la réalisation du projet d’agrandissement et de réaménagement de l’aérogare, nous avons intégré l’approche BIM à notre mode de gestion de projet au maximum, du début à la fin. À la mise en place du BIM il y a cinq ans, YQB faisait figure de pionnier avec son bureau de projet réunissant tous les intervenants, soit les professionnels de l’ingénierie, le gérant de construction et l’équipe de projet de YQB. Nous avons été confrontés à plusieurs défis que peuvent entraîner la gestion du changement, mais le jeu en valait la chandelle », a indiqué Marie-Noelle Simard, directrice Ingénierie et construction à l’Aéroport international Jean-Lesage de Québec. « Nous sommes persuadés que le Centre d’expertise BIM viendra répondre à un besoin criant en matière de formation dans la région de Québec. Les projets de construction de demain se feront tous en BIM et c’est maintenant qu’il faut former notre main-d’œuvre et nos entreprises afin que tous puissent suivre la parade. » a ajouté madame Simard.
La révolution BIM est aussi importante pour l’industrie que lorsque les logiciels de dessin assistés par ordinateur ont remplacé la table à dessin. Désormais, la nécessité de passer en mode BIM se fait sentir aussi au sein de plus petites entreprises. Les besoins de formation et d’accompagnement sont grands. Le Centre d’expertise BIM est là pour accompagner les entreprises dans cette importante transformation au cœur de l’avenir du secteur de la construction au Québec.
La construction du Centre d’expertise BIM a bénéficié du soutien du Fonds d’investissement stratégique pour les établissements postsecondaires (FIS) du gouvernement fédéral. Il reçoit également le soutien du Programme d’appui au développement de l’industrie québécoise de l’habitation (PADIQH), de la Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ).
