The CanBIM Calgary Event was a fantastic event with many new milestones achieved.
Emceed by CanBIM Board Member Brent Mauti the event was both informative and inspiring. Hearing from Neil J. McFarlane, P.Eng.Assistant Deputy Minister, Health and Government Facilities Division, Alberta Infrastructure on their challenges, plans for the future and how they are embracing new technologies was very informative and encouraging.
The Workshops, a first for CanBIM Regional Sessions, offered attendees an in depth review of BIM for the various perspectives from foundational knowledge, to more advanced practitioners as well as the owner perspective. The workshops were lead by industry members William Myers, Director of Operations, Global eTraining (BIM Foundations), Martin Neault, Major Projects BIM Leader, DIALOG, Dragan Marinkovic, BIM Specialist / Manager at CANA Construction Ltd. and Juan Lepe, Architect and CanBIM CP (BIM For Practitioners: Collaborative BIM Workflows & Processes for all Stakeholders) and Geraldine Rayner, Director, SummitBIM Consulting Architect AIBC, BA DipArch, RIBA, LEED®AP, Bob Heyman, President SummitBIM, and Rafael Lucero, Manager, Site Geomatics and Building Inventory, Alberta Infrastructure (BIM for Owners). Following the workshops the workshop instructors lead a Panel Discussion about industry stakeholders about model based delivery, data management, level of detail for handover to the owner, the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder in the process of procuring, delivering and operating the asset over the lifecycle.
Daniel Doherty, C.E.T., B.Tech, CM BIM Manager of Virtual Construction, Clark Builders presented Almost There! A BIM Postmortem From The $350M Stanton Hospital Project, an interesting review of the challenges and solutions on the project.
John Locke, Sr. Principal Research Scientist, Autodesk talked about the use of generative design and value created from generating hundreds of possible design options that take a "neighbourhood or community" approach to maximizing the value of a space and the many design options and features that are available instantly. A fascinating look into what is now happening!
Giancarlo Da Silva, Virtual Construction Specialist, PCL Construction and Iian Ho, Project Coordinator, PCL Construction present their work and case study from the Rocky Ridge Recreational Centre. The project had many very unique and complex attributes both process wise and geometrically.
A joint presentation between EllisDon and Fieldwire presented Using Mobile Technology to Reduce Risk on the Manulife Centre in downtown Calgary. Hammad Chaudry, Virtual Design and Construction Manager, Western Canada, EllisDon, Ben AndrewProject Coordinator, EllisDon and Marielle Price, Director, Customer Success, Fieldwire discussed their advantages of using mobile technology for efficiencies with contract documentation, deficiencies and progress reports, site reports, QA & QC reports, Concrete Data and analytics, construction coordination and logistics and detailed conflict analysis.
Moderated by Past CanBIM President, R. Allan Partridge the Alberta Next Steps rounds out the content for the day discussing possibilities and predications for the future. The panelists included representatives from the key regional groups Bruce McCallum, CanBIM Vice-President, Rafael Lucero, Manager, Site Geomatics and Building Inventory, Alberta Infrastructure, Daniel Doherty, Chair, aceBIM, Dragan Marinkovic, Committee Member, cBIMc, Mirra Mahedan Chair and Founder, eBIMc and Geraldine Rayner Director, SummitBIM Consulting Architect AIBC, BA DipArch, RIBA, LEED®AP. All panelists were asked to provide their thoughts and views on what the next 30 years will look like, what are they pleased with in regard to progress we have accomplished and and in depth conversation on areas for improvement for the Alberta industry.
Pietro Ferrari, Chair of Education and Research Committee, presents the CanBIM Certification Update and Certification Ceremony with two Education Institutions receiving CanBIM Educational Designations for their programs. The two education institutions are IBI Group with their IBI-U BIM Curriculum, which received CanBIM Foundations in BIM Theory and Global eTraining received CanBIM Foundations in BIM Software for their Revit Structure, MEP, and Architecture programs. CanBIM also presented the third CanBIM Company Certification to IBI Group for having achieved at least 1 (one) Certified Individual at each level for CanBIM Professional Certification (P1, P2, P3, and P4). The Company Certification was presented to Brent Mauti, CanBIM CP and Global Director of Design Technology at IBI Group. Congratulations to all our recipients from the Calgary Session and the Individual Certifications that were noted in Pietro's presentation.
The day concluded with a closing reception and some great conversations about the next steps in Alberta. Was a great event with a lot of progress.
